Glucagon is a hormone of the pancreas. The pancreas releases glucagon when blood glucose levels fall too low. Glucagon causes the liver to convert stored glycogen into glucose, which is released into the bloodstream.

The liver is an organ only found in vertebrates which detoxifies various metabolites, synthesizes proteins and produces biochemicals necessary for digestion and growth. In humans, it is located in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, below the diaphragm. Its other roles in metabolism include the regulation of glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells and the production of hormones.

insulin and glucose. Beta-cells (in the pancreas) release insulin in the blood vessel. Insulin stimulates the absorption of glucose in skeletal muscle. Closeup of pancreas and islets of Langerhans. Vector illustration for biological, medical, science and educational use

Human liver. Hepatic glycogenosis. After conventional tissue preparation (fixation by formaldehyde-and staining with haematoxylin and eosin) the glycogen is usually removed from the hepatocytes. Using an alcoholic fixative, the glycogen is preserved, appearing as a pink material that fills the hepatocytes. The accentuation of the cell membranes and displacement of the nuclei to the cell periphery still can be seen.
